The quality of healthcare in Highlands County was greatly enhanced by introduction of the countywide 911 Emergency Telephone Dialing System several years ago. Highly qualified Emergency Medical Technicians, supported by state-of-the-art equipment and communications systems, are stationed throughout the county and are only a few minutes away from a call for emergency medical assistance.

Supplementing this essential and effective program is a 24-hour-a-day service provided by Aero-Med jet helicopter service and Florida Hospital Flight One service that quickly transports emergency cases to hospitals or Trauma Centers and Specialty Care Centers in Tampa and Orlando. These pilots and crews are highly trained medical technicians with a proven track record of effective emergency care and transportation.

Highlands County residents and visitors are well served by the presence of three outstanding hospitals. Highlands Regional Medical Center, a 126-bed modern facility is located on US 27 South near the southern city limits. Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, a 111-bed modern facility is located just off US 27 North between Sebring and Avon Park and Florida Hospital-Lake Placid, a 50-bed hospital with the only Senior Behavioral Health Unit in the area with 17 beds for that purpose. All three hospitals offer a wide range of medical/surgical services including heart cath labs and have 24-hour Emergency Rooms staffed by highly trained technicians and physicians. All three hospitals are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and employ medical staff equipped to handle a full range of patient needs. Patients requiring C.T. Scans, MRI’s and a variety of nuclear medicine diagnostic services are able to receive these services without leaving the community. The hospitals regularly conduct ongoing programs to recruit highly specialized physicians, nurses and medical technicians in order to meet the health care demands of a growing community and region. Thus, opportunities for employment in healthcare and related fields usually exist in the area.

Opened in 1965, Highlands Regional Medical Center has grown to a 126-bed acute care hospital with over 100 physicians of nearly all specialties on staff. Through several additions and renovations, the hospital has positioned itself to provide the latest in medical services and technology in a wide range of healthcare disciplines.

This community-owned hospital enjoys a Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from all walks of life. Health Management Associates, one of the premier Hospital Management firms in the nation, operates the hospital under a contract with the local Board of Directors. The Highlands County Board of County Commissioners provides significant financial support to the hospital on an annual basis.

In addition to four fully equipped and modern hospital operating suites, a specially trained total joint replacement nursing staff serves the needs of patients requiring surgeries on hip, knee, shoulder and hands. In the Women’s Center, specially designed birthing suites and a trained maternity nursing staff provide the latest in birthing experience for new parents. All area hospitals are heavily involved in the community and support a wide range of civic, cultural and social activities and organizations. The presence of these hospitals results in many benefits to the community and the region. Several hundred physicians and hundreds of highly trained health care technicians and nurses are available 24 hours a day to meet the myriad of needs of residents and visitors alike. Each year, additional physicians and healthcare support organizations and professionals of all types establish new practices in the area, all contributing to Sebring becoming a healthcare center of choice for a multi-county region.

The availability of high quality total healthcare is a strong factor behind the decision of business and industry to expand or locate their business in the community. And, along with the high quality of education, is often a deciding factor for people of all ages who seek to relocate to an area of Florida that maintains a high quality of life without all the congestion and problems of larger communities.
